The "doggie" monster

I always wondered when monsters were going to creep into Kara’s dreams at night. Actually Kara loves “monsters” so I knew it wouldn’t be monsters, per se.

Kara woke at 1am petrified because “the doggie … I’m scared of the doggie … the doggie go woof, woof … the doggie scaring me”. Kara has always been very tentative (OK, down right scared) of real life dogs (she loves to see them in books). Then we tried to put her down to sleep one night at a friend’s house – it may have been 3 weeks ago. All was well until she heard their dog barking in the next room. I went up to find a very tearful and panicked Kara, dripping with sweat, and obviously scared of the dog barking in the dark. She hadn’t mentioned it for weeks yet last night she was clearly still affected by it. Lance was able to get her back to sleep within minutes, but when I went to wake Kara up this morning she was still very unsettled by the whole experience. She told me the “doggie’s in the closet” – I showed her inside the closet but she still wasn’t convinced.

I had read somewhere that you have to find a way to “de-monster” the room in these situations so I suggested that we get out the vacuum and vacuum the doggie up and put him outside. The response I got was “I’m scared of the vacuum too” (I couldn’t win for trying!). Kara likes alligators at the moment so I tried this angle – we’ll get the alligator to chase and eat the doggie. Kara looked at me skeptically and wanted more details. So I had to repeat the elaborate ‘alligator eats doggie’ scheme several times. I’m still not sure she believes me so we’ll have to see what happens tonight. Poor Kara!
