Finally

I am not usually the mum that drops both kids at a birthday party with a parting "OK, I'll be back in a couple of hours to pick them up, have fun everyone" ... but tonight I did!

If I had one kid I might do this more often but two, so close in age, and so 'lively' in nature, I always feel like I should stick around for support (plus, I just never knew it was the 'norm' to drop and run but it apparently is).

Maybe the rules are that you can drop and run for an at-home birthday but you stick around if it's at a park or an event place ... everyone stayed when we had Kara's party at a park. And I'm still trying to figure out all of life's rules ... I've never been much of a rule follower (never really broke rules either, I just prefer to change rules instead) but when kids are involved I seemingly tow the line.

So it felt odd, but boy did I enjoy that hour and a half! So funny though ... I didn't last the entire time ... I went to the party an hour before it was meant to finish and had a wonderful time talking with the parents and regretted not staying there the whole time! They had the best set up ever ... the birthday girl's older sister (10 y.o.) had those eight or so 5 year olds hearded from one activity to the next including the games, mahem, meal, cake, and presents ... allowing the mom and dad to sit back with their feet up practically the whole time! Gotta get me one of those 10 year olds!!

(Don't know why I enjoyed the hour and a half as much as I did ... all I did was go home and clean the toilets!).

I think it differs according to the family hosting the party too ! We went to a 6 year old neighbor's party recently and although the mom encouraged me to leave my girls there and go home (and most of the other parents left), I could see that there was not even close to enough supervision ! So I stayed. But then we went to another neighborhood party a couple weeks ago and I stayed but definitely felt stupid. There were only 6 five year old girls there and I really should have left but couldn't quite figure out how to extricate myself once the party started.

what counts is that you were happy to get that extra 1h 1/2 for yourself
